GSTO1, also known as p28 or GSTTLp28, is a protein that localizes to the cytoplasm and contains both an N-terminal and a C-terminal GST domain. In mouse, the encoded protein acts as a small stress response protein, likely involved in cellular redox homeostasis. This protein has dehydroascorbate reductase activity and may function in the glutathione-ascorbate cycle as part of antioxidant metabolism. Recombinant human GSTO1 protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E.coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.

Summary The protein encoded by this gene is an omega class glutathione S-transferase (GST) with glutathione-dependent thiol transferase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities. GSTs are involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics and carcinogens. The encoded protein acts as a homodimer and is found in the cytoplasm. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2010]
