Background | Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a protective protease inhibitor. It inhibits elastase released by neutrolphils during inflammatory reaction and irreversibly inactivates trypsin secreted in duodenum and elsewhere. α1-antitrypsin normally presents in plasma at 1.5-3.5 mg/mL, but increases in acute phase reaction, malignancies, pregnancy and trauma. Severe hereditary a1-antitrypsin deficiency can result in damages to alveoli, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and liver diseases such as jaundice and cirrhosis. The protein is also found in the neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in the brain lesions of Alzheimer’s disease, and has been suggested to contribute to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. |
