Background CD15 is a carbohydrate that is referred to as the Lewis X antigen, also known as alpha-(1,3)-fucosyltransferase 4, which is expressed on a variety of glycolipids and glycoproteins  found on the cell surface of  neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils and non-hematopoietic tissues including embryonic tissues. CD15 is reported to function as an adhesion molecule and is involved in chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Expression of CD15 is also associated with a wide variety of tumour cells including some adenocarcinomas and certain types of myeloid and lymphoid leukaemias.  Reed-Sternberg cells, found in cases of Hodgkins Lymphoma, also express CD15 and antibodies recognising the CD15 antigen are often used to help differentiate between Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Synonyms Lewis X, X-Hapten, Lacto-N-Fucopentaose III, Stage-Specific Embryonic Antigen, SSEA1
