Background	GAD-65 and GAD-67, glutamate decarboxylases of 65 kDa and 67 kD,arespectively, function to catalyze the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyricacid). In the central nervous system GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)functions as the main inhibitory transmitter by increasing a Cl-conductancethat inhibits neuronal firing. GABA has been shown to activate bothionotropic (GABAA) and metabotropic (GABAB) receptors as well as a thirdclass of receptors called GABAC. The inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA, acts through two ligand gated channels, GABAa and GABAc receptors and GABAb, the latter of which acts through a G protein mechanism. GABAbR1 is one of two G protein coupled receptors for GABAb that acts as a heteromeric assembly with GABAbR2.
