Gene Name interleukin 17 receptor A
Background IL-17RA (IL-17 receptor A), a type I transmembrane protein with a ubiquitous cell and tissue distribution has no homology with any known cytokine receptor family. This receptor is a member of the IL-17 Receptor family. IL-17RA encodes an unusually large cytoplasmic tail and was shown to activate inflammatory events typical of innate cytokines such as TNFa and IL-1b including activation of the transcription factor NF-KappaB. IL-17RA is highly expressed on hematopoietic cells, but also at lower levels on osteoblasts, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells (Chang SH, 2011) (Zhu S, 2010).>The role of the IL-17 family during parasite infections is an emerging area of research with often contradicting results. In this regard, IL-17RA signaling has been shown to be both deleterious and protective during Toxoplasma gondii infection. Furthermore, two groups demonstrated that IL-17 plays a protective role in T. cruzi infection although the underlying mechanisms remains poorly understood. Indeed, both reports showed significant contradictions that might be related to the different experimental settings but deserves further investigation and discussion, since members of the IL-17 family, IL-17A, IL-17E and IL-17F, are produced during T. cruzi infection. Furthermore, it is confirmed that IL-17RA signaling is required for host resistance during the T. cruzi infection and focused at the mechanisms underlying IL-17RA-mediated protective effect. IL-17RA antibody has the potential to be a therapeutic option for many diseases (Raychaudhuri SP, 2012) (Tosello Boari J .2012).
